Going to a networking event for the 1st time can be a very daunting experience if you have never done it before.
Worries could include:-
- I won’t know anyone there
- How I am going to avoid been left standing up the corner not talking to anyone?
Having recently started going to networking events myself, I thought I would share 3 tips to help you make the most of your networking experience
Get there early
Thank you to Emma Cossey of The Freelance Lifestyle for giving me this great tip.
If you are really nervous about meeting new people, get to the venue early and introduce yourself to the organiser.
By getting there ahead of most other attendees, the organise should have more time to spend with you and be able to offer advice how to get the most out of the event.
If you can, also ask them to introduce you to someone else that they know to get you going.
When you approach someone for the first time, smile and then introduce yourself.
A smile brightens every day and could just put the other person at ease.
You never know this could be their first networking event and they could nervous too.
This might sound a bit obvious, but do try to have fun.
Once you have introduced yourself to a number of people, it does get easier to say hello. Before long, you might be cracking a joke with someone.
There is a certain camaraderie amongst networkers and everyone wants to it to be a success. Everyone wants to meet someone new.
Just go for it. It is really quite amazing who you can meet and what you can learn from them.
Do you have any other great tips for getting the most out of an networking event?
