#DearMe – Letter To My Younger Self

Last week, YouTube created an initiative called #DearMe in support of 2015 International Women’s Day to inspire and empower young women everywhere.

This initiative gave women everywhere the chance to create and upload a video of them offering advice to their younger selves.

#DearMe - Letter To My Younger Self

What a brilliant idea. A genius use of modern technology don’t you think?

What I love about the #DearMe campaign is that it also gives us a chance to remind ourselves of how far we have come and what we have achieved.

I am not super great at the whole video thing though, so I have decided to blog my letter to my younger self so here goes:-

Dear Younger Self,

How are you today?

I have just dropped in from the future. Yes, a bit like going through the time portal in The Many Colored Land that I know you have been reading.  I am just hoping though that I won’t disintegrate into a pile of dust on the way back.

I want to tell you to always believe in yourself. Yes, I know you don’t right now.  Trust me when I tell you that I have seen what happens when you do truly believe in yourself. Your confidence shines through and you really are amazing.

Also, that thing you are thinking about doing right now. You know, that one you are not sure you have the courage to do. Just do it. What is the worst that can happen? They can only say no, you know.

Oh, and by the way, before I go.

That bit of writing you have been doing. Keep doing it.

I’ll give you a bit of a heads up. In a few years time, they’ll invent something that will change the way nearly everyone shares ideas with each other and you never know what opportunities that might bring you, do you?

Take care, dear one.

Jo (March 2015)

  1. I think i would say something along the same lines – believe in yourself. I had a problem with that when I was younger, as I think many of us do. Just knowing that things would turn out ok would have been a great relief to myself back then.

If I was being a little sillier, I might say something along the lines of buy stock in Apple and Google. You know, I’d just like to give myself a few extra bucks in the future. Although back then I’d have no idea what Google was.

Your idea about buying Apple and Google shares made me smile.

    1. Hi Nisha,

Thank you for commenting on this post.

Having the faith to continue doing something is a good one. I like that. It can only make us stronger I think.

      Have a great week.

  3. Hi Jo,

That’s a pretty cool thing they were doing, I totally missed that but I’m not on YouTube a whole lot these days. Okay, I take that back. I’m always searching for some funny videos to share.

Three years ago I shot a video giving myself advice from 10 years previously. A friend had given me that idea so I wrote about it and posted my video as well. It was only a 10 year span so I didn’t have a lot of advice to give myself personally but I sure did professionally.

Had I shared advice to my younger self well I think that belief factor would have definitely come into play. I would have told myself to not follow the norm, of what I’m being advised to do but to find my own place and what I love doing. Stop being so fearful of the unknown.

Great post and advice Jo, thanks for sharing this with us and loved it.

    1. Hi Adrienne,
Thank you for commenting on this post.

Very interesting that you recorded a video for 10 years previously.

If I went only back 5 years, I could probably offer myself some different advice for career matters. That said, I might not be typing this if I chose to follow it.

      Have a great week.

      Jo
