BEDM2016 Day 5 – Another Interesting Fact about May 5th For History Fans

Day 5 of Blog Every Day In May and today it is all about May 5th

Well, actually, the topic on the BEDM calendar is Cinco de Mayo but I covered that when I took part in BEDM last year. Here is what I found out about Cinco de Mayo then.

So this year, I thought I would have a look to see what else has happened on this date in history.

Having looked at the list Wikipedia handily has, my eyes homed in on this entry:

1821 – Emperor Napoleon dies in exile on the Island of Saint Helena

The reason I think I saw this first is that I have been to where Napoleon is buried. I don’t know about you, but I tend to identify with things more if I have been to somewhere connected to them.

Napoleon was originally buried on St Helena but his remains were brought back to France in 1840 and now rest at Les Invalides in Paris. He is under the dome – that’s the one in the picture below.

So there it is, your history lesson for today. Anything else happen on May 5th we should know about?
